Become a Member

When you become a member of Alternatives, you join a global movement that transcends the boundaries of nations, languages, religions and ethnicities in order to support the environment, democracy, human dignity, and solidarity amongst all peoples around the world. Being a member of Alternatives is about showing your belief that another world is possible, and your commitment to making that vision a reality.

Members make small financial contributions. Thanks to these contributions, we can keep executing our projects (which have touched more than 30 countries thus far), we can keep training young Quebecers and Canadians to become conscientious and motivated citizens (over 1,000 interns have already been trained here) and we can continue to educate people here at home on issues that are largely hidden from the headlines of mainstream media.

Members also give us a common voice. By speaking together, we can demonstrate our solidarity to governments, companies, and other organizations. By standing together we can exert the political pressure that is necessary to encourage these institutions to respect our common objectives and values, and to result in real change.

FAQ for New Members

How much does a membership cost?

As a member, you can choose to give us a small donation every month or one larger donation every year.

Here are the standard monthly amounts:

  • Supporting Members: 10$
  • Regular Members: 5$
  • Unemployed and Student Members: 3$

Here are the standard yearly contributions:

  • Supporting Members: 120$
  • Regular Members: 60$
  • Unemployed and Student Members: 36$

Should I give monthly or yearly?

That's up to you, but donating monthly has several advantages. The advantage
of monthly donations is that your donation is divided over the year, so it is more affordable. For us, the monthly donations are reliable and provide the financial stability we need to plan in advance for our projects and campaigns, and to reduce our administrative costs.

How do the monthly donations work?

  1. When you become a member of Alternatives and you choose to make monthly donations, you can choose the amount of your donations ($3.00, $5.00, or $10.00).
  2. We will deduct this amount from your account on the 15th day of the month.
  3. You will see the amount of your donation(s) on your statement(s) from your financial institution next to Alternatives.
  4. At the end of the year, we will send you a receipt for tax deductions based on your monthly donations. In other words, your monthly donations will be added up at the end of the year, and you will get one receipt
for all of them. For example, someone who joins as a Supporting Member (for $10.00 per month) on October 8th will donate $10.00 on October 15th, November 15th, and December 15th, and get a receipt for tax deductions for $30.00 the following year.

How can I stop my donations?

Just call us - it's that simple. You can stop your donations at any time because your membership is not a contract. You can cancel your membership and your donations at any time. You are always in control. You can also modify the amount of your contributions. You can even suspend your donations and begin donating again at a later date (for example, if you leave the country for a while, or are in
financial difficulty). All you have to do is call us at (514) 982 6606 and tell us what you want to do!

What if I just want to make a one-time donation?

No problem. If you prefer to just make a one-time donation, please visit our Donate page. Your donations can be of any amount you wish, and are also tax deductible.

Can companies and organizations be members?

The only members of Alternatives are people, but unions, businesses, philanthropists and other organizations can donate whenever they want.

Will Alternatives respect my privacy?

AlwaysThe information you provide to Alternatives will remain strictly confidential. Alternatives will never sell, lend, exchange or expose your personal information such as your contact information or financial data for any reason to any other individual, organization, company, or other entity except for purposes specifically required by law. We will
use this information to communicate privately with you in order to discuss your membership or other needs and wishes, any possibile administrative problems, or to issue your yearly receipt for tax deductions.

What happens after I join?

We will send you a welcome package. We will expect to see you at our public events. We will encourage you to come to our annual General
Assembly and other forums like the Alternatives Days to share with us and inspire one another, and work together for a better world.
